Hi,

Can anyone tell me what is happening with the Arvin Meritor building on Fordhouse Lane? They seem to be constructing a pretty large metal fence around the front of the building. This looks pretty unsightly and i am certain it will not be very long until it is covered in graffiti.

If anyone has any useful information or know of anyone i can contact regarding the site then i would be very grateful.

Thanks.

This is purely speculative on my part but my thoughts were that they are securing the site ahead of demolition.

This was my thoughts at first as the fence does look like a building site fence to keep people out rather than a permanent one. I couldn't find anything on the building planning site to suggest what might be happening in the future though.

RE: Arvin Meritor works fencing.

I've been told that B'ham City Council have acquired it to use as a van/lorry park for Council business.

It would have been polite if said Coucil had informed local people don't you think ?

The offices were going to be refurbished at one time, and social services (who are presently above the co-op were going to move to there.
I don't know if this still the case.

Timothy Huxtable is looking into it and will let me know more asap, in the meantime I have just had an email from Mark Norton, (ref stirchley photo's, Home Page) saying that he recalls reading a B'ham Council press release that he thinks relates to this:- Deal signed for new council offices in Stirchley: link.

This part of the statement makes sense with the activity that has been noted:

Over the next three months, the landlord, Revelan Group Plc, has to mobilise their construction team to demolish the existing industrial facility and then to build the new office which will take a further nine months.

Hi,

I have heard from a friend that they have heard somewhere that the site is destined to be a Petrol Station. I really hope this isn't true... Has anyone else heard of any updates?

Thanks

Arvin Meritor Site taken from the Council Pamphlet
Many residents have contacted us asking for an update on what is happening on the 'Arvin Meritor' site, Fordhouse Lane.

The site will be used as offices for the City Council as part of the "Working for the Future" programme for modernising the City Council's
workplaces and work styles and should create many new jobs in Stirchley.

These new offices, with modern technology, will enable better services to be delivered to Birmingham citizens. Over the next three months the construction team will demolish the existing industrial facility and build Lifford House" - the new offices, which will take a further nine months. It is hoped that these offices will be occupied next Summer.

Hi,

I can't seem to get any of the links in the posts to work.

I have received a letter from Timothy Huxtable, which does mention the parking situation. The main trouble still remains that people will still park in front of the residents houses even though there are spaces on the front car park and the rear car park of the offices.

I can only imagine that this is because the employee's want to be able to get away quickly at the end of the day and avoid the traffic exiting the site.

I wish i didn't have to complain about this and as it is a public roads and yes, people pay their car tax so they can park anywhere. But the fact of the matter is that I live here and i find it increasingly more of a problem and worst of all, it makes me feel like i don't want to live here anymore.

The parking has been an increased problem for my elderly neighbor with her disabled son with the ice covering the pavement. When he comes home on the bus and has to get off the bus 50 meters away and walk across sheet ice, it is really dangerous.

There isn't much I can do about the problem but I do wish to attend the next forum meeting to raise it in any other business. I have heard from one of my neighbors that another neighbor plans to start a petition of some sort to try an make people more aware of the problem. The trouble is that i doubt people who are affected  by the problem are not really likely to car too much to get involved.

Regards,
Matthew

Hi Matthew,
Have the offices fully opened yet? perhaps the situation will ease when they do, we have a similar problem in elm tree road, with the TSB bank, at least eight cars all day, the worst offenders are the ones who deliberately park taking up enough room for two cars.
Although they do not have a car park, but the Plastic shop across the road sometimes park one of their vans in the road all day with no regard for residents.
But they are all legally in the right, but perhaps morally wrong, no thought of the elderly, disabled or those with young children.
Please come to the next meeting and raise it in any other business and bring your neighbours.
Next Meeting Monday,8Th February,7.30pm, Stirchley Community Centre.
